Local Conservationists Curtis and Carla Trost to be Honored as Area Finalists at State Soil & Water Conservation District Convention

The Minnesota Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts (MASWCD) has named Curtis and Carla Trost of Wabasso, Minnesota as one of the eight area finalists in the 2024 Outstanding Conservationist Award Program. Curtis and Carla Trost will be recognized at the December 4, 2024 luncheon at MASWCD’s 88th annual convention at the DoubleTree Hotel in Bloomington, Minnesota. The awards program recognizes farm families, individuals, conservation organizations, and other groups for their accomplishments in implementing conservation practices and improving Minnesota’s natural resources.

Of the eight finalists, one will be announced as the State’s Outstanding Conservationist of the Year at the December 4th luncheon.

“We are proud of Curtis and Carla Trost for what they have done in conserving the natural resources in our area” said Jeff Potter, supervisor of the Redwood Soil and Water Conservation District, which nominated Curtis and Carla Trost for the award. “The Trust’s have been farming for 42 years, with the farm site being in Carla’s family since 1893, making them the fourth generation to live there. It’s great to recognize the work they have done locally. Over the years, Curt has implemented many practices to promote healthy habitats and forage for local wildlife. Curt Trost has also utilized many soil health practices to prevent soil movement within their cropland fields. The Trosts see firsthand the importance of how cover crops and no-till planting stop soil movement on their operation. Cover crops not only help keep the soils covered from the elements but also provide refuge and a food source for the abundant local wildlife. The Trosts are excellent caretakers of the land and believe in protecting our soils for future generations.
